ABSTRACT
Objective: to Identify the maximum bite force (MBF) and the inhibitory masseteric reflex (IMR) during the action of the first or second molars.
Methodology: 66 subject in two groups were studied. Group 1: 40 subjects with complete denture. Group 2: 26 subjects with no one or two first molars on the right and left side, but the presence of four second molars. The MBF was measured bilaterally in the first or second molar using an analog-digital system (kg/force). The IMR was registered using the Refleximeter UNAM ®, evoked by a chin tap and measured the duration and amplitud of the inhibitory and potentiatory waves.
Results: using discriminant analysis it was identified that first or second molar correctly predicted 87.87% the behavior of the MBF and IMR (F=5.59; p=0.001). The highest MBF observed in the group 1 was combined with the lowest inhibitions and the major potentiations. During the action of the second molars, the lowest MBF was combined with the major inhibitions and with the lowest potentiations.
Conclusions: the first molars exert major force if compare to second molars, however, these do not require a great force to have a better IMR.
