ABSTRACT
Background: The interest in vitamin D has recently increased in view of studies that demonstrate insufficient serum concentration in subjects with obesity. Moreover, an association between vitamin D deficiency and metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus has been described.
Objective: To describe the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in obese and overweight patients and its association with insulin resistance (IR).
Methods: A total of 42 selected patients with overweight/obesity were studied. Differential characteristics of the patients with or without vitamin D deficiency were determined. IR was determined by means of the homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI).
Results: The serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] were not associated with a particular body mass index cut-off; however, 25(OH)D levels were low in those with HOMA-IR ≥ 3. This was consistent with a high frequency of cases with levels of 25(OH)D ‹ 20 ng/mL among patients with QUICKI ‹ 0.55.
Conclusions: Low levels of 25(OH)D are associated with IR, as it is reflected by HOMA-IR and QUICKI indexes. The somatometric variables did not show any association with serum concentration of this vitamin, which suggests that IR may be a consequence of the low concentrations of vitamin D.
