Appendiceal mucinous cystadenoma: case report

ABSTRACT

Background: Mucocele is a term used to describe a rare lesion of the appendix, characterized by distention of the organ. It is caused by accumulation of mucous substance within its cavity, without defining exactly if it is a benign or malign entity.
Clinical case: We present the case of a 76 years old woman with a history of chronic pain, who was preoperatively diagnosed with a tumor of the appendix.
Conclusions: Open surgery is recommended to avoid rupture of an intact mucocele, and to allow an adequate exploration of the abdominal cavity. Right hemicolectomy as the treatment of a mucocele of the appendix is reserved for malign tumors; however, in cases of an intact benign tumor, appendectomy is the treatment of choice.
