ABSTRACT
Introduction: pulpotomy in primary teeth is one of the most controversial treatments in pedodontics due to the fact that the biocompatibility of the material used in contact with the pulp tissue can make the difference between success and failure. Formocresol is the most used medication in a pulpotomy; however due to the concern about the toxicity and carcinogenicity of the formocresol, other alternatives such as the mineral trioxide aggregate have been proposed.
Objective: to evaluate clinical and radiographic pulpotomy success with MTA in 58 primary molars.
Material and methods: sampling consisted of 37 patients, ranging from 4 to 8 years old; 58 molars were obtained. Inclusion criteria consisted of dental organs affected by cameral pulp, with 2/3 of root length and that they could be restored with stainless steel crowns. Once the procedure was done, the patients were evaluated during 48 months. The statistical analysis was done with PASW Statistic version 18.0.
Results: clinical and radiographic success was 96.4%. Pulpar response of the dental organs to which the pulpotomy with the mineral trioxide aggregate was performed, was favorable during the evaluated periods.
Conclusion: MTA is an alternative part of the pulpotomy of primary molars; after exfoliation of some of thepulpotomized teeth, none of the observed successors presented structure alteration.
