ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the existence of possible genetic factors in acute appendicitis with only the genealogic tree as an instrument.
Material and methods: On 108 pedigrees taking as propositos 56 women and 52 adult males, physicians, medical students or individuals from the general population who accepted to answer the questionnaire, we know whether their first-degree relatives (parents or siblings) were or were not appendicectomized.
Results: Six propositos answered affirmatively (5.55%) and 102 (94.45%) answered negatively. The first group had 37 first-degree relatives and the second group had 437, with eight and 32 appendicectomized individuals among them, respectively. Chi square test had a value of 9.874 (p ‹ 0.002).
Conclusions: Despite many biases such as memory, the special answered type, the lacks of pathology studies in certain cases, the chi square value founded reinforced the idea that probably it exists some genetic factors in acute appendicitis. Perhaps the highest risk for a first-degree relative to acquire the infectious could be as high as 25%, but it is necessary for more epidemiological surveys to improve the accuracy. Inheritance model more adjusted to acute appendicitis is the multifactorial one.
