ABSTRACT
Porcelain gallbladder, also known as calcifying cholecystitis or chronic calcareous cholecystopathy, is a rare and interesting finding, where the gallbladder is characterized for having a bluish coloring, with an extensive calcification in its walls that could render it fragile and easily breakable. It is considered a gallbladder disease of chronic onset, and it is more frequent in women. Its exact etiology is unknown, but some hypotheses have been proposed to determine why calcification occurs. It is frequently asymptomatic. Porcelain gallbladder is considered a premalignant disease. Although the frequency with which both conditions appear together is difficult to determine, it is known that is can increase the risk of gallbladder carcinoma considerably, more predominantly so in cases with porcelain gallbladder types II and III. Due to the aggressiveness and poor prognosis of gallbladder cancer, cholecystectomy is recommended as a prophylactic method in patients with porcelain gallbladder.
