ABSTRACT
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) remains one of the most serious and vexing challenges in the care of very preterm infants. Affecting approximately one quarter of infants born less than 1500 g birth weight, BPD is associated with prolonged neonatal intensive care unit hospitalization, greater risk of neonatal and postnatal mortality and a host of associated medical and neurodevelopmental sequelae. This article focuses on the epidemiology and definition of BPD as well as the current evidence pertaining to a number of potencial preventive treatments for BPD: noninvasive respiratory support technologies, nitric oxide, vitamin A and caffeine.
