ABSTRACT
Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common operations in the history of surgery in Mexico and throughout world.
The objective of this work is to present the experience obtained with the employment of the tension-free technique in Hospital Juárez de México in Mexico City.
Material and methods: From January 1998 to February 1999, 30 procedures were carried out by means of the previously mentioned technique and studying the following characteristics: age; sex; hernia type; associated illnesses; complications; operative time; postoperative pain, and time of convalescence.
Results: Twenty-five patients were operated on 20 were men and five women. Five patients presented bilateral hernia, so that we carried out 30 procedures. Of the 30 procedures, 25 were primary hernias, five recurrent, 11 were of the direct type, 14 indirect, four mixed, and one crural.
Operative time was 50 min in the primary procedures, 60 min for recurrent procedures, and 120 min for bilateral procedures. The hospital stay was 24 h. The only complication was a seroma presented in one patient. All patients retorned to their daily activities within the first week after surgery.
We observed that tension-free hernioplasty is applicable to any kind of hernia; it reduces surgical time, postoperative pain, and time of convalescence.
With these observations, we conclude that the tension-free technique presents advantages compared with classic hernioplasties.
