ABSTRACT
Introduction: a cross-sectional on prevalence was conducted in the north area of the Sancti Spiritus city from January, 2006 to December, 2009.
Objective: to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome according the criteria of the Latin-American of Diabetes.
Methods: the study universe included persons aged 16 or more from 20 randomized consulting rooms, which accounted for the 40 % of north area total. The averaged sample was of 913 persons where 1 019 were polled and assessed. The 93,62 % were residents of urban area. Home selection was made through a randomized number table.
Results: global prevalence of metabolic syndrome increased significantly with age of the person (≥ 50 years old) with a body mass index (≥ 25 kg/m²) with the urban
origin persons and with the glucose metabolism deterioration.
Conclusions: prevalence of metabolic in study population is high.
