ABSTRACT
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is now considered the sexually transmitted infection (STI) most common in the world. Often, these infections are asymptomatic, passing unnoticed unless molecular methods are used. Other infections become chronic, with the greatest potential oncogenic. The virus was detected in oral squamous cell carcinoma and benign lesions of oral mucosa, where it was found high and low HPV oncogenic risk. In normal oral mucosa identified different types of high oncogenic risk HPV. Studies indicate that the finding of HPV in healthy mucosa depends on the method of study employed. However, despite the importance of early diagnosis, there is little information on the prevalence of HPV in oral mucosa healthy. HPV infection can be diagnosed by different methods, but not all the genome to detect or determine the viral type involved. HPV typing can find viral types circulating in a population, facilitating the development and implementation of programs for prevention, diagnosis and treatment, so the identification of high cancer risk HPV should be performed routinely. Although the best diagnostic methods are molecular testing should be considered the geographical prevalence of different types of HPV in the choice of specific method akin to avoid inaccurate conclusions. Finally, new methods of detection of oral HPV are being studied, considering benefits for prevention and treatment of oral cancer.
