ABSTRACT
Introduction: Otosclerosis is the primary focal spongifying disease of the labyrinthine capsule. Possible etiologies include: autoimmune disorders and hereditary, local, hormonal and general factors. A history of progressive conductive hearing loss, tinnitus and vestibular symptoms are common.
Diagnosis usually is made easily often the history and examination. The key objective measurement remains the audiometric test. Stapes surgery remains the mainstay of treatment for most patients. Criteria for patient selection and improved surgical techniques are important to increase the success rate.
Material and method: A retrospective analysis of the charts of all patients who underwent primary stapedectomy at the Department of Otolaryngology HE of the CMN SXXI from January 1996 to February 2000 was performed. This study evaluated the average hearing result.
Results: Air conduction pure-tone threshold averages improved in 95.8% of cases and deteriorated in 4.2%. Air-bone gap was closed in 85.6% and not closed 14.4% to 10 db. Air-bone gap was closed within 5 db in 97.1% and 10 db in 2.9% of cases. We found statistical significant differences among preoperative and postoperative hearing thresholds by standard (t) test (p± 0.0001).
Discussion: This study confirms that surgical technique performed in our service for stapedectomy is successful in the majority of cases.
