ABSTRACT
We have studied 14 eyes with diagnosis of keratopathy, all after penetrating keratoplasty during 5 years. We have registrated visual capacity, characteristics of graft, and changes through the years. We have found a direct relationship (p = 0.0004) between initial changes of corneal disease and the evolution of the graft, showing the different stages of opacity and return of the disease. We have demonstrated best visual results in patients with penetrating keratoplasty using donor grafts of 7.5 mm diameter or less (p = 0.02). With histopathologic studies of the primary cornea, we could demonstrate the following changes: Corneal elastotic degeneration including stromal deposits (93%); changes in Bowman’s layer (85%); stromal scars (85%), and alterations in epithelium (65%). Chronic evolution of the disease, inflammation of conjunctiva, and very characteristic geographic distribution truly relevant to these patients.
