ABSTRACT
Introduction: Ocular involvement in HIV/AIDS is prevalent.
Method: A descriptive study of a
group of patients with HIV/AIDS was carried out from Sanatorium Santiago de las Vegas, Havana,
in 2009. With a universe of 380 patients with HIV/AIDS was obtained, applied the inclusion
criteria (patients over 15 years, of both sexes) and exclusion (patients with cognitive impairment
or a disability that is not allowed to refer information and/or undergo to eye exams and previous
diagnosis of eye diseases), a sample of 148 patients, they were formed two study groups
according to the developmental stage of the disease. Variables were age, sex, racial
characteristics, personal medical history general and ophthalmology, stage of disease, recent
results of CD4 counts and viral load and outcome of the eye examination. The statistical
processing was performed using SPSS, with the percentage as a summary measure and the Chisquare
test for differences in homogeneity and association. In all cases significance level was
considered 0.05.
Results: Males predominate (84.45%) and patients between 25 and 34 years
(51.35%), no differences by racial characteristics. The 43.92% of patients had ocular
involvement. In those HIV positive the most common was conjunctival microangiopathy (10.81%)
and AIDS cases retinal microangiopathy (21.16%).
Conclusions: the presentation of eye disease
was related to the clinical stage of disease.
