ABSTRACT

Restrospective study of 1,209 consecutive cases of laparoscopic cholecystectomy from July 22, 1992 to Dec 31, 1996 was perform. A total 82.7% were female, and the average age was 42.6 years. Or of the group over 40 years of age, 27.4% had some type of chronic degenerative disease. The surgical indications were chronic lithiasic cholecystitis (76%), acute cholecystitis (12.5%), cholelithiasis (5.5%), and gallstone pancreatitis (3.4%). The conversion rate was 5.8%. Cholangiogram or ERCP were completed only in 6.7% of patients, and laparoscopic biliary duct exploration was completed in 0.5%. Average operating time was 81.3 min. General complications were observed in 7.03%. There was only one death. A total 81.6% of patients were discharged within 24 h. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a safe and effective procedure that can be accomplished in elective and acute cholelithiasis.
