Infection pattern by the hepatitis C virus in Ciego de Avila Provincial Hospital during 2005-2010

ABSTRACT

A descriptive observational study was carried out in the southern area of Ciego de Avila province, which included all patients older than 20 years, to which an antibody was detected against hepatitis C virus (HCV) positive in serum and they were treated in the specialist hepatology Provincial General Teaching Hospital “Dr. Antonio Luaces Iraola” during the period of january 2005 to january 2010. A total of 101 patients were diagnosed, infection appearing more frequently in masculine sex with 51 cases (50.4%) and prevailing fundamentally in age group among 40-49 years of age with 32 (31.6%).from 101 infected patients, five (4.9%) debuted as acute hepatitis,42 (41.5%) were developed a chronic hepatitis and 43 (42.5%) presented an hepatic cirrhosis at the time of diagnosis.Only 11 patients (10.8%) were antibody´s asymptomatic chronic carriers against hepatitis C virus(anti-HCV) positive.The main transmission way of infection was the parenteral one, collecting it in 49 patients (48.5%),the records of their treatment by surgery and in 23 (22.7%), their treatment by multiple-transfused.In 13 cases it couldn´t be specified the posible way of acquired infection.
