Intermaxillar retractor in the approach to the skull base

ABSTRACT

During transmaxillary access to the skull base, it is necessary to stabilize and maintain in a lower position the distal, segment of the maxilla that has been osteotomized by a Le Fort I technique. For this purpose, we proposed some time ago the use of a mouth drop inserted between the remanent bone edges. At present, we a similar instrument obtained from a silastic block (Dow Corning, Inc. Midland, MI (USA), whose size and retention has been improved.
