ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to determine the differences in the clinical evolution in children with extensive burns produced by immersion in hot liquids, treated with prompt total tangential excision and covered with human epidermal cultured allografts (Group I or study), compared to those treated with traditional prompt excision and covered with antimicrobial cream (Group II or control). Hospital stay for Group I was 14.4 days and for Group II, 24 days (p ‹ 0.01). Epithelialization for Group I was 83.8% and for Group II, 63.8% (p ‹ 0.03). The number of surgeries for Group I was 2.2 per patient and 4.9 for Group II (p ‹ 0.006). Complications were found in 20% in Group I, compared with 46.6% in Group II (p ‹ 0.001). Several advantages were found when children burned with hot liquid were treated with early total burn excision followed by human epidermal cultured allografts. This strategy helps with epidermis regeneration, as well as reducing hospital stay, number of surgeries and complications.
