ABSTRACT

Background: Lung cancer is responsible for the higher rates of cancer mortality worldwide and in Cuba, so it is necessary to study the dynamic changes in the clinical presentation of a new series of patients, to better understand the natural history of this disease. Objective: To describe the epidemiological, clinical, and histopathological imaging of patients with primary lung cancer over a period of 3 years. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2008 to December 2010 in the pulmonology department of Hospital General Universitario "Camilo Cienfuegos" Sancti Spiritus, Cuba. 180 patients were identified. We obtained demographic, clinical, imaging and histological analysis. Results: The predominant male and mean age at diagnosis was 63.4 years. The 95% had a history of smoking and 66.1% were active smokers. The diagnosis was made 92.2% cytohistological. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most frequent. Conclusions: In patients with squamous cell carcinoma Spiritus is the predominant histologic type. Most patients had a history of smoking. In women, the disease was diagnosed in advanced stages and in men in early stages. The therapeutic modality was the most common chemotherapy.
