ABSTRACT
Introduction: The morphometric study of the small intestine mucosa in children with malabsorption syndrome is a useful tool for a better characterization of its mucosal damage. Objective: To determine values of the microscopic morphology of the small intestine mucosa in 13 children diagnosed with malabsorption syndrome.
Methodology: A descriptive study was performed in 13 biopsies obtained from the Pathology Department of the José Luis Miranda University Hospital of Villa Clara, between January of 1999 and September of 2007. The variables assumed included villi’s height and diameter, depth of Lieberkühn’s crypts, and total cellularity of lamina propria, using direct linear measurements.
Results: Data derived from the study showed with statistically significant results that the average value of villi’s height was 0.241333 millimeters (mm), villi’s diameter was 0.182154 mm, crypt’s depth was 0.161487 mm and cellularity of lamina propria was 125.00 cells per field
Conclusions: On regard to the findings in normal mucosa, villous height values were lower, while their diameter was higher, Lieberkühn’s crypts had average depth values within normal limits and total cellularity of lamina propria showed higher average values.
