ABSTRACT
Short stature is one of the most frequent reasons for consultation in pediatrics, especially in developing countries. The stature is determined by bone growth, which is a complex process, influenced by the interaction of multiple factors and requires proper functionality and integration of the various systems in order to reach the expected stature of each individual; therefore, any prenatal or postnatal noxa affecting the child can compromise the resulting stature. This review aims to show the medical personnel who faces for the first time a child and his family, who consult for short stature, how to make a comprehensive clinical assessment of the patient to determine and confirm the suspected diagnosis and carry out the proper approach to each case individually, keeping in mind that the causes of short stature may be of endocrine origin or may be determined by diseases involving other systems. The interpretation of the various laboratory tests can provide information about the health (or illness) status that caused the loss of functional homeostasis.
