A descriptive study of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) distributions and larval Dengue rates in Haiti

ABSTRACT
Introduction. Aedes aegypti occurs in Haiti, but there is little information about this mosquito species or dengue in the country.
Objective. Perform descriptive larval
Ae. aegypti studies to obtain spatial distribution data, breeding site preferences, as well as the patterns of House Indexes (HI), Container Indexes (CI), and Breteau Indexes (BI).
Materials and Methods. The sampling was conducted in 20 districts from all ten Departments in Haiti. Breteau index (BI), House Index (HI) and container index (CI) values were determined during May to July, 2010.
Results. Ae. aegypti was found to be distributed throughout the areas sampled. Highly significant differences were found between the means of the indexes (IB, IC and ID) for each Department. The highest mean and standard desviation values were found in Sud-Est, Centre, and Nord-Est Departments. These values were found to be higher than the historic values for the studied sites. Analysis by Department showed that only one community in each of the Ouest, Sud, Artibonite, and Sud-Eest Departments, respectively showed mean values higher than the grand average for the Departments. Water storage tanks were the most frequent positive container for
Ae. aegypti, followed by used tires from cars and then miscellaneous containers.
Conclusions. We found moderate to high values in all of the indexes studied. This makes it mandatory to promote the establishment of a program for dengue vector control in Haiti.
