ABSTRACT
Introduction. Chagas disease (CD) is endemic in Latin-American countries, including Mexico. In the state of Morelos, Mexico, past epidemiological studies have confirmed the relevance of CD.
Objective. To detect antibodies against
T. cruzi in blood of humans and dogs, and to determine parasites in
Triatominae in the community of Puente Pantitlan, Morelos.
Materials and Methods. This was a pilot transversal study performed during the period of October 2003 to October 2004. Sampling was conducted in 74 households; 233 blood samples were obtained from persons › 5 years old and 33 blood samples from dogs; and triatomines were collected to for taxonomic classification and to detect parasites. Antibodies against
T. cruzi in humans were determined by ELISA and indirect immunofluorescence (IF), and by ELISA in dogs. Parasites in
Triatominae feces were observed by optic microscopy.
Results. Seroprevalence was 1.2% (3/233) in humans and 24.2% (8/33) in dogs.
Meccus pallidipennis was the only triatomine captured. They were found to have a 44% (8/18) CD infection rate. Thirteen out 74 households had positive CD cases in humans, dogs or triatomines.
Conclusions. These findings confirm the relevance of Chagas disease in a temperate rural community of the State of Morelos located 1,630 meters above sea level.
