ABSTRACT
Background: The learning of English is essential for health professionals in Cuba, and although the process has improved, there are some difficulties in the use of learning strategies for reading comprehension which affect the teaching learning process. Objective: To diagnose the use of learning strategies in reading comprehension for first year medical students. Material and method: A bibliographical revision was carried out, and methods of the three levels were used. The population was composed by professors who were teaching English to first year medical students during 2007-2008 academic year and the six groups of students of this same year, taking three of them randomly. A survey was applied to students and an interview to professors as well. Results: By means of the interview it could be proved that the majority of the professors gave importance to the learning strategies but they did not take them into account in the reading process and the students used only some of them unconsciously. Conclusion: The results in both instruments showed that the learning strategies were not used consciously which influenced negatively in the reading comprehension process, so a learning strategies inventory was done to be used in the teaching learning process.REFERENCES
