ABSTRACT
Early diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection largely depends on tuberculin skin test. There are loads of variables and parameters associated with the precise administration and interpretation of this test. Induration diameter should be correlated with age and the socioepidemiological situation that enlarge the risk of infection and illness caused by tuberculosis. A positive skin test indicates the presence of an infection by mycobacteria but not always an illness; a negative test does not totally exclude infection or illness. Vaccination with bacillus Calmette Guérin does not contraindicate application of tuberculin skin test and a positive skin test in children and adolescents should not be attributed to prior vaccination in neonatal period.
