ABSTRACT
Introduction: A dramatic increase in the incidence of fungal infections has been reported in recent years. This especially true with mortality include age, invasive procedures and previous use of antibiotics. Systemic Candidiasis constitutes an important cause of morbimortality in newborns in Intensive Care Units.
Material and methods: Retrospectively we reviewed 40 case histories of newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital of Children IMIEM from January 2004 to January 2009, with an release or death diagnosis of Systemic Candidiasis, based on positive cultures in one or more site or corporal fluids. The objective was to analyze the factors associated to Candidiasis. The information was obtained from the archives of Hospital of Children. The individual patient record was carefully reviewed in efforts to determine possible risk factors at the time of the positive cultures as well as the antecedent of Candidiasis.
Results: We observed 40 infectious events due to
Candida spp, with a mortality of 38%; the age group with the highest mortality was newborns preterminy 55%. The broad spectrum antibiotics use predominated (90%) between the associated risk factors. The main factors associated with mortality were the antecedent as well as being intubated at the moment of the infection.
Conclusions: Fungal infections and particularly those due to
Candida spp, represent an important cause of morbidity and mortality. The broad spectrum antibiotic use predominated between the associated risk factors. The associated risk factors are those due to protracted use of broad spectrum antibiotics and invasive procedures including endotracheal intubation. An increase in the isolation of
Candida was noted.
