ABSTRACT
Acalasia is a disease characterized by the neuronal degeneration of the mesenteric plexus of lower esophageal sphincter and of the esophageal body. The incidence of Acalasia is low; however considering that it is an incurable disease, early diagnosis is of most importance in order to improve symptoms and quality of life. Diagnosis is primarily clinical whose principal symptom is progressive dysphagia. Definitive diagnosis is realized with manometry which can be aided by endoscopy. Treatment is variable, from pharmacotherapy which includes botulinum toxin to endoscopic surgical procedures. The course of treatment depends on the clinical state of the disease.
