ABSTRACT
In Mexico City, the rate of maternal mortality is very high compared to the rest of the country. Based on this observation, a study was designed to determine the behaviour of maternal mortality and identify the contributing factors during 1998 and 1999.
Data was obtained from death certificates. These show 126 maternal deaths in 1998 and 110 in 1999. With a rate per 100,000 live births of 69.3 and 60.7, respectively. A total 20% of death patients was 35 years of age or older and 10% were teenagers. Most deaths occurred in public hospitals and 70% of the diseased had at least a secondary school education. The highest rates observed were in the entities of Gustavo A. Madero, Magdalena Contreras, and Iztacalco. The first health was occupied by direct obstetric deaths with 82.72% in 1999 and pregnancy-related hypertension causing over one half of maternal deaths reported in this study.
