ABSTRACT
Pandemic flu AH1N1 has been spread worldwide and has claimed many lives in a short period of time; therefore, it’s imperative that the nurse professionals know and apply the preventive measures to modify the impact in terms of mortality and morbidity of this disease. Objective: Determine the level of nursing staff knowledge at the emergency room and intensive care units toward preventive and biosecurity measures recommended by the Panamerican Health Organization (PAHO) against infectious diseases as pandemic flu AH1N1. Material and methods: It was developed a field study that was descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional. The sample included 60 nurses, who belong to the departments of Emergency room and Intensive Care Unit, on business days. It was applied a questionnaire consisting of 20 questions, and a shadow study, to determine the level of attachment to preventive and biosafety measures in the study. Results: Data were entered into a database in the statistical analysis program SPSS 18.0 for Windows operating system, showing the results in percentages. Conclusions: It was concluded that the level of knowledge of preventive and biosafety measures recommended by PAHO against pandemic flu AH1N1 by nurses at the emergency and intensive care units from the INNyN is acceptable (74%) and the level of application of their knowledge is better (82%).REFERENCES
