A dermoscopic contribution to the establishment of minimal surgical margins of resection in basal cell carcinoma on the face and scalp

ABSTRACT
Surgical resection is the best treatment for basal cell carcinoma (BCC). However, when this procedure is incomplete, recurrences may occur. Dermoscopy is a technique that can be easily applied, allowing the preoperative visualization of real tumor borders for the purpose of obtaining uncompromised surgical borders.
Aims: To demonstrate the usefulness of dermoscopy to obtain free surgical borders in BCC lesions, followed by histopathological verification.
Methods: Fourteen face and scalp lesions were clinically and dermatoscopically diagnosed as BCC. In all of them, the surgical resection borders were studied by dermoscopy. The lesions removed were sent for histopathological study.
Results: All of the histopathological reports indicated uncompromised tumor in the borders.
Conclusion: The preoperative study of the borders of the BCC by dermoscopy seems to be a safe and reliable method for obtaining free surgical margins. This method is based upon recognition of all the structures that make up the dermoscopy pattern described for BCC.
