ABSTRACT
Objective: To demonstrate that the lack of an adequate knowledge by diabetic patients type 2, is a risk factor in their hospitalizations by hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.
Material and Methods: Case-control design in 114 type 2 diabetic patients and 114 hospital outpatient of General Hospital and Family Medicine No.9 of Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco. Mexico. They were matched by: age, gender, schooling, time in diabetes diagnosis, and familiar coexistence. Patients who were first hospitalized for glycemic lack of control they compared their knowled ge with those who attended the outpatient department of Family Medicine, the instrument DKQ 24 was applied. Was taken as a result of lack of adequate knowledge when they had ‹70% of respondents, was conducted OR (95%) for the analysis of causality.
Results: A total of right answers was 2984 (54.53%), the outpatient had 1652 (60.38%) and hospitalized 1332 (48.68%), p = 0.000001. As for “general knowledge” 196 (85.97%) patients showed lack of adequate knowledge, 112 (98.25%) for the hospital and 84 (73.68%) for the outpatient, OR = 20 (95% CI 4.47-126.6 .).
Conclusions: The lack of adequate knowledge about diabetes can be a risk factor for hospitalization of type 2 diabetes patients.
