Prevalence of Excessive Alcohol Consumption Applying the Audit-C in Primary Care Center in Zulia, Venezuela

ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the prevalence of excessive alcohol consumption among patients in a primary care center.
Material and Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional study. Population 4028, random sample of 102 adult patients both sexes, directly applying the AUDIT-C (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Short Form).
Results: 65% of the sample were females, a 54.9% of the total group of 31-59 years had. The overall prevalence of binge was 29.4% with 33.8% in women and 21.6% in men. By linking sex and age group in both sex, patients 60 years or more recorded the highest percentage (100% men and 70% women), followed by 31 to 59 years (21.7% men and 15.2% women) and Finally, 19 to 30 years (8.3% men and 35.7% women).
Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of heavy drinking in this sample of patients. The results for females in the younger age group tend to be very high. In males, there was an increase in the prevalence of excessive consumption with increasing age of the participants.
