ABSTRACT
Introduction. Gastroschisis is a congenital anomaly characterized by an abdominal wall defect usually situated to the right of the umbilicus. It requires surgical management immediately after birth. Although the goal of treatment is closure of the defect as soon and as safely possible, there is still controversy regarding the timing of the closure, i.e., primary versus staged closure.
Material and Method. In a retrospective study we compared two surgical procedures: the “umbilicoplasty” versus PVC bag covering. The umbilicoplasty was formed in 34 patients and staged closure using PVC bag in 28 newborns.
Results. Clinical course was similar in both groups, but it was more favorable for umbilicoplasty in assisted mechanical ventilation, early oral feeding and less catheter complications.
Conclusion. Both procedures had similar outcome.
