ABSTRACT
Spouse abuse during pregnancy has been asociated with an increment in complications for mother and baby, including low birth weight, obitus, abortus, preterm delivery, infections, abruptio placentae and preeclampsia. The present
objective is to study the asociation of spouse abuse during pregnancy with low birth weight and maternal complications. We conduced a cohort study of 250 pregnant women, observing for physical abuse during pregnancy an RR of 2.073 for low weight birth (95% CI 1.086-2.073); for substance abuse during pregnancy an RR of 5.116 (95% CI 1.811-14.447). We also observe an stadistical association with obitus and abdominal trauma.
Conclusion: Spouse abuse during pregnancy significantly increases the risk for low birth weight, obitus, abdominal trauma and substance abuse.
Recommendations: There is enough evidence supporting screening for spouse abuse during pregnancy as part of the standard medical evaluation.
