ABSTRACT
Introduction: Ultrasound imaging is a key element of the urologist’s diagnostic armamentarium because it is a fast, effective, non-invasive, radiation-free and relatively inexpensive study. In regard to kidney evaluation, ultrasound has the important advantage of providing detailed information about kidney anatomy. It is a particularly valuable tool for the integral evaluation of cortical kidney tumor, characterizing a lesion as cystic or solid, enabling the urologist to carry out immediate treatment or posterior surveillance. Objective: To determine the frequency of incidental ultrasound imaging detection of renal parenchymal masses in individuals over eighteen years of age with no known previous kidney pathology as well as to determine kidney size through ultrasound imaging in the study population.
Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was carried out from January 13, 2009 to April 16, 2010 on a sample of two hundred patients of both sexes who sought medical attention at the outpatient urology service of the Hospital Regional Lic. Adolfo López Mateos of the ISSSTE. These patients had no known previous kidney disease or symptomatology related to kidney disease.
Results: Right and left kidney measurements from all patients were registered and one patient presented with right kidney agenesis. Mean anatomical size was 102.55 x 49.48 x 50.20 mm for the right kidney and 100.30 x 49.13 x 50.62 mm for the left kidney. There was a greater frequency of kidney cysts in men than in women and a greater frequency of solid tumors and tumors with malignant appearance in women than in men. Lumbar pain was the only statistically significant symptom related to tumors with malignant appearance.
Conclusions: Kidney anatomical size in the study population was smaller than reported sizes in series studying European patients. Kidney ultrasound was useful as an effective screening method for early detection of renal parenchymal tumors. Lumbar pain was a clinical symptom associated with kidney tumors with malignant appearance.
