The use of titanium 3-D miniplates for stable fixation in toe to hand transfer

ABSTRACT
The experience in seven patients with toe to hand transfer, with excellent results in bone healing and hand function, with the use of titanium three-dimensional (3-D) miniplates system is presented. These plates were originally developed as a bone fixation system in maxillofacial trauma, they are a new method for stable internal fixation in selected cases of toe to hand transfer, and it is part of the Würzburg® system. Their small size needs less dissection and being a monocortical system, there is no need for many surgical instruments. The stable fixation provided permits an early motion program in the transferred toe that will lead to a faster recovery of the patient. We present these plates as an easy and reliable option in bone fixation armamentarium in microsurgery procedures to be undertaken in the hand.
