ABSTRACT
Several arguments of the scientific community concerning the disciplinary nature of visualization are outlined, and the hypothesis that it is a consolidated scientific discipline is argued. Some approaches of analysis are introduced and the relations established among its different branches are described. The links of this new discipline with Information Science because of its interdisciplinary nature are summarized. The interpretation and complementation of the historical and epistemological approaches were based in a qualitative analysis of a set of information sources stemmed from relevant scientific literature of this field.
