ABSTRACT
Background: Neutropenic colitis (also called neutropenic enterocolitis, necrotizing enterocolitis, neutropenic colitis agranulocyte or enteropathy) is a common complication in immunocompromised pediatric patients, we now knows that not only affects the blind. Objective: To determine the imaging studies requested, with suspected neutropenic colitis, how many are positive and identify tomographic findings, and negative for this entity, which were the other causes that simulated neutropenic colitis.
Material and methods: Retrospective and longitudinal involving children with clinical suspicion of neutropenic colitis, between June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2010.
Results: 45% of patients with suspected neutropenic colitis tomographic were positive. Other causes identified were: pancreatitis, duodenitis, wall abscess and adnexal cyst. The findings were: bowel wall thickening, alterations in fat pericolonic and terminal ileum, in addition to free fluid. The most affected segments were ileocecal valve and right sigmoid. Wall thickening averaged 5.3 mm, with a maximum of 7 mm and 4 mm minimum.
Conclusion: The abdominal pain in neutropenic patients must be ruled timely neutropenic colitis, CT is the method of choice for this, besides allow to discard other causes of abdominal pain.
