ABSTRACT
Objective: To establish the frequency of unusual breast lesions detected by mastography and histopathology correlation in the Hospital General de Mexico.Material and methods: We have studied patients who attended to the Hospital General de Mexico, to the mastography service during the morning shift, in the period from March 02, 2009 to November 30, 2009, in order to capture patients showing unusual lesions, both benign and malignant for this time span.
Results: An affluence of 3501 patients from which 2318 (75 %) were excluded, since they were patients whose study reflected totally degenerating mammary patterns; they already were patients diagnosed previously with mammary cancer or they were under treatment, patients with mammary implants and patients under 20 years old. The remaining 25 % of the patients (1183) was a representative sample that besides requiring complements such as ultrasound and additional projections, getting out from these, 10 cases (0,8 %) that for his mastography and ultrasound presentation were considered as unusual with the respective hystopathological correlation, which reflected diagnosis such as mastitis, atypical mammary fibroadenoma, phyllodes tumor, intracystic carcinoma, fibrocystic mastopathy, sarcoma, subcutaneous lymphoma, intraductal papiloma, methastasic melanoma and ectopical ganglion.
Conclusions: A wide range of benign and malignant unusual injuries can be found in mastography, therefore, radiologists are to consider benign and systemic causes for carrying out differential diagnosis before finding malignant appearance images.
