ABSTRACT
Dehydration is a disturbance that occurs in a wide variety of circumstances affecting water and salt losses. The most commonly associated disease among infants is infectious diarrhea. In Mexico diarrhea is a common cause of mortality among children aged ‹5 years. Parental report and clinical signs of dehydration are essential to physicians for diagnosis, classification and to create a treatment plan. Children presenting medical care with mild to moderate dehydration should initially be treated with oral rehydration therapy and those with severe dehydration or hypovolemic shock the indicated treatment is intravenous therapy. Prompt and accurate choice of treatment for dehydration and the electrolyte imbalances that accompany it are important for the child’s outcome.
