Systemic thromboembolism caused by a left atrium mixoma in an adolescent

ABSTRACT

We present the case of a 14 year old male adolescent, admitted to the Emergency Department, presenting symptoms suggestive of cerebral ischemia of sudden onset, pain and diminished strength of the upper and the lower left extremities. A cranial computed tomography showed no abnormalities. A Doppler ultrasound disclosed an obstruction in the left iliac artery with absence of blood flow in the ipsilateral superficial femoral artery. Turbulent blood flow was identified in the abdominal aorta above the iliac artery bifurcation. The superior mesenteric artery and the superior celiac artery were not visualized.
A transthoracic echocardiogram disclosed the presence of a mass in the left atrium. An abdominal angiotomography was done to determine the extent and nature of the obstructions-thromboembolisms. The patient was successfully operated for the removal of the intraatrial mass and the thromboembolisms.
