ABSTRACT
Introduction. The postoperative hospitalitation period for children has gradually decreased. The average inpatient stay following removal of a non perforated appendix is 5 to 6 days. We propose an early discharge in these cases.
Material and method. A prospective study of 214 consecutive open emergency “good prognostic appendectomy” was carried out. Parents of the patients were informed that their children would be discharged early after operation. Appendectomy was performed with a standard technique.
Results. There were four simple appendicitis; 59 supurative and 151 gangrenous. Three minor complications occurred. No patient had to be readmmitted. 199 (93%) patients were discharged within 12 hours postoperatively.
Conclusions. Early discharge of operated patients within 12 hours postoperatively is safe and is readily accepted by children’s parents.
