ABSTRACT
Introduction: Intussusception is uncommon in adult age. Frequently, depending on the location is associated to a subjacent pathology. Given multiple applications of sectional imaging methods such as CAT, intussusception is found incidentally in most of the cases. Objective: Determining signs allowing to recognize it, identifying causing or demonstrating the spontaneous reduction through CAT.
Material and methods: A series of patients hospitalized in our institution, with several clinical diagnoses, in a period of 3 years 6/12 and that incidentally, intussusception was appreciated. Studies were carried out with 8 detectors CAT with simple phase pelvic-abdominal protocol and with oral contrasts and IV – arterial, portal and excretory phases –.
Results: Invagination in 37 patients (17 male patients, 46% and 20 female patients, 54%) with an age range of 19 to 65 years old was shown, demonstrating the following percentages: The most common invagination sites, of uncertain etiology, of dynamic spontaneous resolution and was indeed shown with intraabdominal tumoral lesions (five cases, 14% ).
Conclusions: Invagination in adults is infrequent, causing 1% of intestinal obstructions. In an increased percentage, reaching up to 86 % of cases, intussusception is an incidental, asymptomatic and idiopathic findings, during CT studies.
