ABSTRACT
Introduction: Worldwide, colorectal cancer is the third cause of death from cancer in both genders, but in developed countries becomes the second. Fiveyear survival rates are significantly different by stage, still 90% for detected disease and 10% for disease distance, clearly linked to early detection. Depending on early detection notable progress in screening, diagnosis and treatment exist.
Objective: To conduct a review on colorectal cancer regarding epidemiology, risk factors, clinical manifestations and diagnostic methods, mainly imaging methods which are of great importance to diagnose and staging.
Methodology: Articles published in the medical literature directamenfrom 2002 to 2009 were reviewed, using the term colorectal cancer and relevant manuscripts were selected by consideration of the author.
Conclusion: The advent of new imaging methods and adequate scrutiny of colorectal cancer is fundamental for early diagnosis and effective treatment of the disease.
