ABSTRACT
In Mexico, voluntary donation became imperative following the emergence of Human Immunodeficiency Virus in the mid 80’s of last century, with the amendment to the regulations applicable to blood banks. More than 20 years away, the donation is not yet a reality: less than 3% of one million seven hundred thousand annual giving is voluntary or altruistic donation. This article addresses the legal and social issues faced and the strategies developed in the Central Blood Bank of «La Raza» National Medical Center, Mexican Institute of Social Security since 1981, beginning with an altruistic donor program and probably the oldest among the nation’s blood banks.REFERENCES
