ABSTRACT
Introduction: The use of intravascular non-ionic contrast media (gas, hydrosoluble or liposoluble substance) in the imaging area has proliferated in the last years due to its exceptional tolerance by the patients. The low osmolality of this type of contrast media contributes with benefits such as low increment of blood’s volume, low toxicity, and low effect upon the hemato encephalic barrier (bloodbrain).
Objective: The purpose of this article is to carry out a bibliographical revision on the characteristics, classification, physico-chemical properties, as well as the secondary effects (quimiotoxicity) of the intravascular non-ionic contrast medium.
Conclusions: A factor that interferes in the incidence of idiosyncratic or allergic reactions can be the patient’s psychological state. The previous treatment with antihistamine, corticosteroids or both has been accepted by some radiologists. Lopromide can be considered a universal agent for all the explorations and radiological procedures.
