ABSTRACT
Introduction: To identify the presence of calcium in the coronary tree in asymptomatic subjects with higher coronary risk factors or with suspected or well-known coronary disease.
Method: Coronary arteries identification was carried out by means of 16 detectors multi-sliced tomography in sequential manner, in simple phase and with the application of non-ionic contrast in bolus, with a postprocess using the Agatston scale, as well as with cuts with multilane reconstruction cross sectional to the vessel, to identify the presence of calcium in the coronary arteries.
Quantification of coronary calcium to 50 subjects was carried out, 20 of which were asymptomatic, but having the presence of higher coronary risk factors and the 30 remaining had coronary well-known or suspected illness.
Results: Calcified atherosclerotic plates were found in both, well-known coronary patients, and in volunteers, finding that there is a narrow ratio between the age and the presence of calcified plates (Pearson’s coefficient of r = 0.415, and a p ‹ 0.05).
Conclusions: The present study demonstrates that axial tomography shows the identification and quantification of calcium in the coronary arteries, in asymptomatic subjects with one or more coronary risk factors that are asymptomatic and in subjects with coronary disease. It allows us to identify the affected arteries, the number of lesions, the severity of the obstruction and it has a correlation of 90% in the selective coronary arteriography. The method is less expensive. It is a procedure that can be carried out ambulatory. It helps to establish the diagnosis and to plan the coronary intervention.
