Ten reasons of rejection of disposing at the INER Blood Bank during the period 2001-2005

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Data for blood donation are available covering the past to present of blood bank history. Nowadays, there are strict guidelines about blood donation which sometimes results in the rejection of some blood donors. Objective: To determinate the 10 leading causes of rejection in a blood bank over a 5 years period from 2001 to 2005. Material and methods: A population of 23,910 blood donors was analyzed in the blood bank from the INER. For each donor, a file registry was done containing the date, name, unit number, blood group, and haematocrit. The rejection causes were obtained from the study of medical file. Results: Of the 10 leading causes of rejection: four were irrevocable and three other could receive treatment for be suitable to blood donation. Other three causes could be reduced by education. A higher percentage of rejected cases was temporary and attributed to lipemic serum (15.76%) whereas the definitive rejected was by inadequate venous system (8.54%) and piercings (8.12%). Conclusion: Of the 10 leading causes of reject almost all of them could be prevented by adequate and timely information to blood donors.
