Gastrointestinal carcinoids are well-differentiated endocrine neoplasms that belong to a diverse group of tumors that arise from cells of the diffuse endocrine system. A wide variety of specialized endocrine cells that populate the gastrointestinal mucosa and submucosa give rise to carcinoids.
