ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the predominant flora of nosocomial infection in a third level teaching hospital.
Material and methods: This is a nine-year longitudinal observational study of 2,175 patients with nosocomial infection which included 2,902 infectious events: 1,861 of these were confirmed by laboratory culture. The most common microorganisms and their behavior were analyzed in general and according to the hospital service.
Results: The most common microorganism was
Candida, followed by
Pseudomonas.
Candida was predominant in the pediatric services, especially
Candida albicans, whereas
Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the main microorganism both in the intensive care units and in the hospital wards.
Conclusions: The service with the largest number of nosocomial infections was Internal Medicine, with 886 cases (40.7%).
