ABSTRACT
Inguinal hernias are common; occasionally the surgeon finds the appendix as part of the herniated contents (Amyand’s hernia). Generally Amyand’s hernia is diagnosed during repair of a right inguinal hernia. It is less common to find Amyand’s hernia in the left inguinal region. Therefore, we communicate the case of a 45 year-old woman with a painful mass in the left inguinal region that grew four years ago. The pain worsened during the last 3 months. The mass was reduced partially due to the changes in position and direct pressure applied. Physical examination revealed a non reducible painful mass. The diagnosis was an inguinal hernia and surgery was done during which the cecum and appendix were found within the inguinal canal. Appendectomy and Shouldice repair were performed. The patient experienced satisfactory results.
